How do fish and seaweed float?
We basically filled up a little bowl with water. Then we placed a medicine dropper (our was plastic and we have a bunch we use for art, crafts, painting, etc.) in the bowl, with it partially filled with water. Then we placed it with it filled with much water. Finally, we didn't put any water in it. This was showing how an air sac in seaweed works.

Unit 5 - Burgess Seashore

Day 1 - Chap 21 Jellyfish (Art, snack, youtube)
Day 2 - Chap 22 Sea Anemone (Report form)
Day 3 - Chap 24 & 25 Seahorse (Mini-book)
Day 4 - Chap 23 Sea Cucumber(Mini-book)
Day 5 - Super Science Concoctions (Pgs 85 -87) Mystery Marble

Day 1
SNACK - We made a jellyfish snack with grape jello and sour gummy worms. Make the jello according to package and then put in bowls. After they have jelled in refrigerator for 4 hours, carefully flip on plate (may have to use a butter knife to gentle pry from bowl). Then add some sour gummy worms for the jellyfishes' tentacles. We actually made this twice. Ya think I would have taken a picture at least once. Maybe we can have the snack again :).
ART -We used markers to color on round coffee filters. Then we sprayed with water and let it dry. (It doesn't take long to dry at all if near a sunny window.) Then we (mom) cut strips of tissue paper and we stapled them around the ends of the coffee filter. My husband cut small squares from a cereal boxes to put underneath the jellyfish so that it would spread out more when we hung from the ceiling. We used a brad to fasten the square and ribbon to the coffee filter. Then we tacked it to the ceiling.
We also viewed some videos on you-tube. We especially liked the one from national geographic site for kids. Jellyfish info and video

Day 2- Simple Report Form for Sea Anemone
We got much of our info from this site Sea Anemone .

Sea Anemone
Day 3 - We made a 4-flap mini-book with a cover for the Seahorse out of colored paper. My son drew a picture on white paper and glued it on the front cover.  We wrote 1 question on each of the flaps and then wrote the answer for each question under the flap.

Unit 4 - Burgess Seashore

Day 1 - Chap 15 Whelk (Shell Match), online, read about whelk
Day 2 - Super Science  Concoctions (Pg 82-84) Liquid Lasagna
Day 3 - Chap 16 Snail (Sandart)
Day 4 - Chap 17 Urchins & Sandollars (Drew picture)
Day 5 - Chap 18 Scallops (Notebook)

Day 1
We found a shell match worksheet and read a little extra online about whelks and other shells.
https://seashellsbymillhill.com/2011/05/22/match-the-seashells-printout-for-kids/

Day 3
Used template of snail from http://www.first-school.ws/t/cpsnail.htm
Printed on cardstock and glued each color (3 different colors) of sand after the previous color had dried. This way the colors didn't mix with each other. Cut out the snail after it was all dry. Glue snail on a background paper and draw a scene if you wish.
Day 5
Drew and labeled picture of scallop from September 2011's Ranger Rick magazine 2011, Page 17.

At the moment, trying to locate the sea urchin drawing. I am also not so good at remember taking pictures during all our science experiments, but the directions in the book are good.

Unit 2 - Crabs, Clams, Seals, & Lobsters

Today I let Z draw a picture of a crab from the internet and then he wrote one sentence underneath. It was all his choosing. I skipped chapter 4 and read chapter 5 first, but he insisted we read both chapters about crabs so we had to go back and read chapter 4 for Day 1 of Unit 2.

It was also his suggestion to draw crabs on BOTH days. He likes to draw. So for chapters 4 and 5 he drew crabs and wrote a little about them.

The blue crab was from internet site while the hermit crab was from Draw Write Now #6. When you don't listen to what mom says and you don't use the story paper , the picture and the copywork ends up on 2 separate pieces of paper.

This is the Unit 2 plan:
Day 1 - Blue crab (notebook)
Day 2 - Clams (narrate about the different types of clams)
Day 3 - Seals (6 matchbook mini-books in one big simplebook)(adapted from www.homeschoolshare.com).
He can draw the Harbor Seal on the cover.
Day 4 - Lobster (printout of minimized coloring page of lobster; label)
Day 5 -Super Science Concoctions - Hovering Veggies exp. (pg 74)

The following sites are extra resources for what we have used so far and planning to use for our notebook pages and mini-books.

Success

We managed to complete what was planned for each's days science last week with a little rearranging of days. All worked out good. I have to work on taking pictures during our experiments.

We did a narration for Chapter 1, a mini-book for the Least Sandpiper in Chapter 2, and we did Day 5's experiment from Super Concoctions, instead of Chapter 3 of Burgess's Seashore.

Our experiment was making brine, so it went well with our reading about salt water in Chapter 1. It took much shaking and adding of salt before it wasn't being dissolved into the water anymore. Then we had to let it sit for several hours until it was a clear liquid with leftover salt on the bottom.

We have plans for a Horse Unit and have already completed 2 out of 4 mini-books for a Lapbook on Habitats.

The Habitat part we are using from Elemental Science's Lapbooking through Biology. We are going to use the Habitat and the Plant part this year. We will use the rest at different times and I will probably use it all with my 3rd child when she gets in K or 1st.

Burgess Seashore Science - Unit 1

We are going to go use the Thorton Burgess Seashore Book as our living book for science for the first 9weeks of Z's 2nd grade year. We are going to do some narrating, note-booking, & mini- lapbooks to go along with what we read about and also experiments from Super Concoctions book.

I haven't seen anything done specifically with the Seashore book, so I am having to pull this all together myself. We are trying to follow the format somewhat how HOD does science but we are flexible and tailoring it to our liking. HOD stands for Heart of Dakota publishing. We love, love, love the curriculum, but as with anything, we are tailoring it to our needs and wants just a little bit. We will be using Bigger Hearts for His Glory for 2nd grade, Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory for 1st grade, and Little Hands to Heaven for PK3.

This blog is an attempt to keep all the science plans and resources together for myself and for others who may be interested in doing something like this.

We will usually read 4 chapters a unit and the 5th day will be for the science experiment.
We will be checking out a few library books such Animals of Sea and Shore & At the Ocean.
The Kingfisher First Animal Encyclopedia is one that we own and we use alot in our science studies.

The first unit will look something like this:
Day 1    Chapter 1     Narrate
Day 2    Chapter 2     Mini-lapbook (Sandpiper)
Day 3    Chapter 3     Narrate in some form (Tattler)
Day 4    Chapter 5     Notebook -DWN pg.49
(Draw WriteNow book #6) (Hermit crab)
Day 5    Super Concoctions Experiment (Brine)

We are trying something else new this year. We are going to do school 4 days a week and the other day will be for catching-up, free day, playing with friends, or fieldtrips. We school year-round.
We are flexible. :)
